When are we ready?

Potty training is a major developmental milestone for both children and their parents. It’s easy for parents to get caught up in the age numbers game when it comes to potty training, and pressure from outsiders and relatives doesn’t do anyone any favors.

The truth is that age doesn’t matter. Even though the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) says there is no set age at which potty training should start, they do offer a convincing reason to wait until a child is at least two and moreso to 2 ½.*

“Children younger than 12 months have no control over bladder or bowel movements and little control for six months or so after that. Between 18 and 24 months, children often start to show signs of being ready.”

*The AAP also adds--- that some children may not be ready to begin using the potty (for both physical and emotional reasons) until 30 months or older.

So the big question is, not the average age of potty training, but how YOU can tell if YOUR child is ready and if YOU are ready to help facilitate that learning process…

How can you tell if your child is ready? The following signs should give you a tip off that your child may be ready to start.

• Your child stays dry at least two hours at a time during the day or is dry after naps.

• Bowel movements become regular and predictable.

• Facial expressions, posture, or words reveal that your child is about to urinate or have a bowel movement.

• Your child can follow simple 2-step instructions.

• Your child can walk to and from the bathroom and help undress.

• Your child seems uncomfortable with soiled diapers and wants to be changed.

• Your child asks to use the toilet or potty chair.

• Your child asks to wear underwear.

The Booty Camp® Potty Training Method gives your child the skills and confidence needed to master the potty on his or her own. Booty Camp® incorporates proven potty-training methods with effective behavioral techniques to provide a parent-child class that gets results. Best of all, noticeable results are typically seen in just one day! Once your child has learned the necessary tools for successful potty training in the class or dvd, he or she will have the ability to use the potty without assistance or a reminder. Other significant benefits of the Booty Camp® Potty Training Method include; personality improvements that frequently accompany the feeling of independence (willingness to attempt other tasks independently such as feeding or clothing), better response to parental instruction, and in an increased sense of pride, pleasure, and self-esteem.
